The Increasing Number of Female Drunk Drivers

Historically, DUIs have been a male-dominated problem within the legal system. But, over the last three decades, the number of female drunk drivers has increased quite substantially. According to our drunk driving attorney in Wilmington NC, female drivers now account for roughly a quarter of all drivers charged with driving under the influence, up from just 9% in the 1980s.

So, why are women finding themselves at the wrong end of the law in DUI cases in growing numbers?

In order to gain a better understanding of the increase in female DUIs, the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility partnered with the Traffic Injury Research Foundation and the American Probation and Parole Association. Although male and female drunk drivers were found to share some similar characteristics, they were found to be different on certain key attributes with regard to dependence, co-occurring substance use, and mental health disorders.
